Wendy explains "I intend to create a piece based on the heavily embellished front cover of the gospel book, using found jewels such as sea glass/shells etc gathered from the beaches around Holy Island. I have started to experiment with small sea glass pieces using wire stitch to show the type of effects I will use."

These beautiful examples of Wendy's work  will give you an idea of the skill involved and what can be achieved. I know I am really looking forward to seeing Wendy's creation for the exhibition and am sure you all are too. Thank you Wendy for sharing this with us.

Working study for Lindisfarne 2013

Thought I best get cracking with putting some of my ideas actually on paper, so here we go...

laying down a collage.

Words, tissue paper and an assortment of papers I knew would come in handy sooner or later! The text is from an old Indian tale which I have chosen to draw a parallel  between comparative religions and the Canon Tables from the Gospels.

It is said that once upon a time a king gathered a few men who were born blind. They were asked to describe an elephant, but each one was presented with only a certain part of it. To one was presented the head of the elephant, to another the trunk, to another its ears, to another the leg, the body, the tail, tuft of the tail, etc. The one who was presented with the head said: "The elephant is like a pot!" The one who was presented the trunk answered, "The elephant is like a hose." The one who touched only the ears thought that the elephant was a fan, the others said that it was a pillar, a wall, a rope, a brush, etc. Then they quarrelled among themselves, each thinking that he was the only one right and the others were wrong. The obvious truth is that the elephant is a unity of many parts, a unity that they could not grasp in their ignorance.  Pasted from <http://www.comparativereligion.com/>

All is revealed...

Finally what you have all been waiting for (and I haven't got round to posting until now) Lindsey Starborn's

A Monk's Life: Rapturous Youth, Rude Prime, Agonising Age

Photo: A Monk's Life: Rapturous Youth, Rude Prime, Agonising Age

Project in progress for our exhibition!

I think they're great and am looking forward to meeting them at the exhibition. Lindsey's take on them - 'Who'd have thought I'd ever be sculpting cheeky monks!'

Just goes to show you never know where an idea will lead you!

To get an overview of the rich diversity of work this exhibition will have to offer take a look at these images by textile artist Catherine Howard who says

'I want to keep my work as open as possible for 1000 Creations-so I decided to look at the journeys taken by the monks all those years ago...so in the car and up the coast road.......'

Knowing Catherine's beautiful work I am excited to find out what she comes up with. Further inspirations by Catherine can be seen by clicking here

In need of any further convincing on the diversity of skills and styles then here  is a digital composition inspired by Lindisfarne  by Lynn Pope.

The promise of a fantastic exhibition I am sure.

Update from Lindsey Starborn

Hi all

Well, we’ve been working away in the background on our 1000 Creations Exhibition planned for September in NeST Gallery, The Witham Hall and (potentially) St Mary’s C. of E. Church. All venues are great spaces for art and are a short distance from each other in the historic and beautiful market town of Barnard Castle.

With over 70 expressions of interest from artists in many different genres we’re really looking forward to seeing what you will exhibit, how you use the ancient skills and how the heritage of the Gospels will inspire you all!

As you know it is a very broad theme, for some I’m sure it will be reflecting and celebrating the landscape, St Cuthbert, Celtic/ Christianity and the amazing art of illumination. For others there may be a 21st century interpretation or conscious utilisation of ancient arts, skills and crafts.

Some terms and conditions you should be aware of:

1.      Acceptance into the exhibition will take place through a virtual vetting panel drawn from the facilitators of the exhibition and including representatives of the host venues. You are welcome to send in your images of work you wish to exhibit as soon as possible but no later than June 28th 2013. These images could be “work in progress” or “similar” by agreement with the facilitators) e-mail these to Lindsey@lindseystarbornart.com  to enable circulation by email to the vetting panel.

2.      Please submit up to 6 images or your website address. If you are unable to do either then please contact me as soon as possible.

3.      You will be informed as soon as possible and no later than July 18th 2013 of the vetting outcomes.

4.      The size and type of your work will determine how it is displayed and how many pieces could be appropriately displayed.

5.      Whilst we can’t guarantee the venue your work will be exhibited in, we would like to know your preference.

6.      You should be aware that commission for NeST and The Witham is 40%. The Church exhibition may be by private contact with the relevant artist or it may be a non selling venue. We will let you know as soon as possible.

7.      With your acceptance will be an Agreement form for you to complete. This will list your work, medium, price and reference (Your initials, number of piece and price e.g. LS3£225 on a label firmly stuck to the back or underside of the work)

8.      Following confirmation we will need an artist statement– this can be brief but should be descriptive of you and your work, it would be helpful if you could describe how the exhibition or your work is or has been influenced by our heritage and the Lindisfarne Gospel stories. This is intended to fit on an A5 laminated paper and will be displayed beside your work. Please send a photograph of yourself to include as a thumbnail with this information!

9.      Our previews at NeST are well attended, made all the more successful by all the wonderful artists who spread the publicity and attract guests from near and far. The preview over these venues promises a great evening but we will have to ask artists for a small contribution to the events. We anticipate that £3 from each exhibiting artist should cover costs. This should be paid when delivering your work for the exhibition (More details about this later!)

10.  If any of you would be interested in doing workshops during the exhibition could you send an outline proposal directly to info@catherinehowarddesigns.com

Saturday 23 March 2013

To celebrate the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the region, a group of artists with a wide range of skills will be exhibiting their work at NeST Gallery in Barnard Castle. There will be plenty to do organising this event - hopefully everyone will enjoy the hands on experience of showing their work and being involved in such a wonderful project. The deadline for work to be submitted will be in early July in order for the gallery vetting panel to consider each artist's work in good time and hopefully without undue pressure.

The exhibition is open to all art forms - sculpture, printmaking, textile design, film, photography, poetry, painting etc.

If you would like to be involved/included on the mailing list for further updates and information please email

lindsey@lindseystarbornart.com

You can also keep up to date with the project by visiting the Facebook page which has just been launched.

An initial meeting was held last Thursday at NeST, Barnard Castle for any interested parties, and I am pleased to say it was a great success. As you can see the coffee was going down well too!
